Sheffield Hallam University: Application Shared Services Transition Audit
THE CHALLENGE
Sheffield Hallam University adopted the “Shared Services” initiative from the Transformational Government strategy, aimed at increasing productivity & efficiency via the reorganising of assets and the sharing of capital investments with similar organisations.
In order to maximise the benefits of sharing services, the intention was to relocate several application services from their campus environment to a remote Shared Services datacentre. However, the University wanted to know the impact on network usage and application performance that such a move might have.
"We needed to understand whether our applications could operate from a shared services data centre. Net Consulting were able to give us the answers" Mark Lee (Head of IT at Sheffield Hallam University)
THE SOLUTION
The University's Head of IT, Mark Lee, commissioned Net Consulting to perform an application performance prediction exercise for their key services to understand which could be relocated without issue, which would require network link upgrades and which would not be suitable for remote operation. The results of the exercise have helped shape the thinking around the implementation of shared services and have avoided some potentially costly decisions.
